Embedded World 2008: Nie wieder booten?

Auf der EmbeddedWorld werden auch am heutigen dritten Messetag wieder die neuesten Trends und Entwicklungen der Embedded Gemeinde diskutiert. Ein aktuelles Thema ist die Entwicklung eines neuen Speichertyps von Physikern der Würzburger Julius-Maximilian-Universität.

Diese arbeiten daran, die Vorteile von ROM und RAM zu vereinen und der leidigen Zeit, die ein Rechner auf Grund der 2 getrennt arbeitenden Speichersysteme für das Hochfahren benötigt, den gar aus zu machen.

Mal eben Mails checken

Wer kennt das nicht. Ich bin seit langem mal wieder mit meiner Freundin zum Essen beim Italiener um die Ecke verabredet, hänge bis zur letzten Minute vor dem Rechner, ignoriere „also ich bin fertig“ Andeutungen, fahre den Rechner gerade runter, da fällt mir ein Mist, ich muss ja noch unbedingt nachgucken wie der Spieltag der zweiten Kongolesischen Eishockeyliga gelaufen ist.

Also, während der Rechner noch quälend langsam alle Programme beendet der demonstrativ laut den Schlüssel einpackenden Frau „sofort, 30 Sekunden noch“ zugerufen, wieder hochfahren, wieder warten bis die magnetisch gespeicherten Informationen in den elektronisch arbeitenden Speicher geschaufelt werden, warten auf das OS, Browser starten und und und...

Bis ich die Ergebnisse endlich auf dem Screen habe (Yakindu hat mal wieder gewonnen) ist es längst ruhig im Flur, die Freundin weg und eine Woche Wiedergutmachung angesagt.

Um dieses (und weitere) Fiasko zu vermeiden, arbeiten die Würzburger Forscher daran einen Speicher zu entwickeln, der zum einen direkten und extrem schnellen elektronischen Zugriff auf die gespeicherten Informationen ermöglicht, zum anderen die Daten beim Abschalten des Rechners aber auch nicht verloren gehen lässt. Das Hochfahren des Rechners nach dem Einschalten würde damit in Zukunft der Vergangenheit angehören, sofortiges Weiterarbeiten machbar.

Träger der Informationen sollen sog. „ferromagnetische Halbleiter“ sein. Diese sind in der Lage, sowohl durch Magnetisierungsrichtung Informationen zu speichern als auch direkt in Computerchips integriert zu werden (Im Gegensatz zu aktuell benutzten ferromagnetische Metallen).
Einziger Wermutstropfen dabei: bis zur Handelsreife wird es wohl noch einige Zeit dauern.
